Chapter Twenty
The Starfish Diner, like the harbor, looked like a movie set. It was a perfect, fifties-vibe small-town diner with a black-and-white checkered floor, red vinyl booth benches, a large, Formica counter with a chrome trim, and chrome-and-vinyl stools.
Jack was seated at a table across from Roger and Caleb. Next to him, Cassidy squirmed uncomfortably in her chair, no doubt because of the pack of people whoâd followed them into the diner and had set up camp at the opposite end of the place.
He reached under the table and patted her knee. âThey need to eat, too. At least your friend, Sally, will make some money off them. Besidesââhe gestured over his shoulder with his thumb to the big man in the chair at a table directly behind himââFlex will take care of them if they get too close.â
She nodded. Jack took in a deep breath through his nose, and even through the strong coffee and baked bread smell filling the place, he picked up the faint scent of honeysuckle that clung to Cassidyâs hair.
âWe had a blast at the studio,â Amanda said from her chair on the other side of Cassidy. âThe Italian Cream Cake and the strawberry shortcake won, but they were all winners.â
Sally, whom heâd met last night at the party, hustled up to the table, shoving her notebook into her apron pocket. She pushed her glasses up on her nose and scanned the table. âI hope everyone enjoyed the soup.â
âMight be the best Iâve ever eaten,â Jack said, rubbing his belly.
Sally flushed pink, then efficiently refilled water and coffee and shuffled off, disappearing through two swinging doors with round portholes.
For a few moments, the table ate in silence. There was only one empty seat between Roger and Tristan.
From the end on Jackâs side, Deeâs phone rang, and she excused herself to leave the table to answer it.
âDid you go to the cake tasting, Tristan?â Jack asked.
He looked up from his phone long enough to shake his head.
âTristan is getting the Blink Medical Clinic all staffed and organized,â Roger said, lifting his coffee cup in salute to his son. Then with a big grin, he said, âHeâs also interviewing interior designers to give the old house a new look before it hits the market.â
Next to him, Cassidy jumped. âWait. What? What about my restoration?â
It struck Jack that Roger was way too animated about thisâhis eyes twinkled like he was about to deliver a punchline. âYouâll still keep the repairs going, Cassy. No matter what the designer does, the damage still needs repair.â He gave a theatrical sigh. âThe place has sat empty for too long. A house needs to be lived in.â
âYou donât need a designer. The design is perfect,â she said, twisting her napkin in her lap. âIt shouldnât be altered. In fact, the few modernizations added over the years should be restored to the way it was originally.â
Tristan snorted. âYeah, there should definitely be no electricity and no running water.â
âThis house most likely always had electricity,â Cassidy huffed.
